The People

Founded in 2005 with the aim of bringing local and contemporary music closer to the hearts of people, chamber•sounds has its roots in Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where its ten members met and developed firm friendships. Since then, the ensemble has further intensified its diverse involvement encompassing composition and arrangement, performance and inter-disciplinary collaborations, outreach, education, and new intiatives.

Together, the group has entertained and brought crowds to their feet with personal arrangements at the Esplanade outdoor series including Jazz in July, Roving Rhapsodies, and Ragtime at the Concourse. Blessed with numerous opportunities to work with composers including Zechariah Goh, Kelly Tang, Leong Yoon Pin, Snezana Nesic, and Walter Zimmermann, they have explored new possibilities in contemporary music at international and local showcases, represented Singapore at the 2006 International Society for Music Educators (ISME) Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, and performed in ensembles including Artsylum Quartet, re:mix, Singapore Festival Orchestra, Singapore National Youth Orchestra, Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and Artyfakt Consort.  Jeremiah Li and Liong Kit Yeng are also active collaborators with theatre and dance productions for the Esplanade FYI and The Studio series, local group Paper Monkey Theatre, Odyssey Dance Theatre, and Huayi Festival.

chamber•sounds has a rich and varied library of music owing to its highly active composing members whose output include Kit Yeng´s 大雨过后 (After the Rain), commissioned by the Singapore Lyric Opera Children’s Choir, Jeremiah Li´s chamber piece Wonderland Songs and chamber opera The Nightingale and the Rose, which have been and will be performed in the USA, Austria and Australia. Samsui: Short Scenes from Daniel Yiau and Alan Kartik’s Haiku Impressions have been performed by the AudioImage Wind Ensemble. Daniel’s Love Songs from Singapore have also been premiered in Germany. This valuable resource has allowed the ensemble to successfully establish itself as a versatile group with an instrumentation spanning from voice and piano to winds, strings and the traditional family of the gamelan and angklung kulintang.

As active educators, chamber•sounds has been able to share the joys of making music through outreach programmes at Orchid Park Secondary School, Crescent Girl´s School and the German European School, Singapore. Members like Clarence Tan, Ng Weiping and Alicia de Silva inspire younger musicians through their coaching of numerous wind bands, string orchestras and angklung kulingtang ensembles which have attained Gold and Gold with Honours at the SYF Central Judgings, whilst Wong Yun Qi and Jeremiah are teaching assistants respectively for vocal and brass students at the Hannover Musikhochschule, and for theory at the Kansas University. Yun Qi also heads the World in our Little Red Dot music making series in which internationally renowned artistes are brought close to home through accessible workshops, collaborations and concerts, whilst Kevin Seah has successfully introduced the works of local composers to the European community.

Today, chamber•sounds is based across the world at the Longy School of Music in Boston, University of Kansas,  Kärnter Landeskonservatorium in Austria, Hochschule für Musik Theater und Medien Hannover and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. This has been made possible with the support of awards including the NAC Overseas Arts Bursary, Yamaha Music Scholarship, Anthony Cius Composition Award, Embassy of Peru Award, and prizes at international chamber music competitions. It is an annual highlight for the members of chamber•sounds to meet back home in Singapore for varied projects, giving back in different ways to the land from where they first started out from.
